Product Care
Although Fat Leaf products utilise the best available materials they are outdoor products and will last longer and look better if you apply some simple care principles.
Planters, Benches & Ponds
All wood used in the construction of Fat leaf Planters is pressure treated and guaranteed against Rot for 5 years. It will still weather however and it is advisable to apply some sort of protection every few years. Our Planters and Planter benches can be treated after 3 weeks in the outdoors.
Applying protection will also help to emphasise the richness of the wood and hold the colour of the wood, which will gradually darken over time without protection. Remember any protective treatment is for cosmetic purposes only and there is no need to treat the inside of our products which will be hidden by compost .
All wooden Planters will benefit from a waterproof lining or use of plastic pots to keep the damp soil off the inside planter walls. The simplest solution is to use a bin liner ( a wheelie bin liner fits our largest products) with some drainage holes in the bottom. Place this in your planter before filling with earth and compost which will stretch the liner to the edges of the box. Then simply trim the liner to soil level.
Planters will benefit from an annual light sanding with 80 grit sandpaper. This keeps the surface smooth and therefore less likely to attract dirt. It also reduces the darkening effect of weathering.
Window Boxes
Fat leaf Window boxes are produced with high quality kiln dried hardwood. This wood has not been treated however and will require occasional oiling to bring out the richness of the wood and alleviate weathering effects. In exposed locations it is advisable to apply a coat of varnish to gain further protection. Metal products should be protected from scratching.
