Larch Planters

The Larch Revolution
We don’t simply believe in giving our customers what they think they want; be believe in giving them something better. With that in mind we are making locally sourced larch our preferred timber for all our planters. Larch is widely regarded as the best performing timber for ground contact. It has anti fungal properties which give it an exceptional resistance to rot without adding any preservatives, which incidentally are massively harmful to the environment.

Our larch is naturally seasoned and untreated, making it very stable and entirely organic. Tanalised timber, which is widely used in our industry has been pressure treated to artificially enhance its life expectancy, and even with this treatment larch will typically last 4 times longer than tanalised pine. And it looks much better - like real wood!

The tanalising process has changed recently to make it more environmentally friendly, but the timber’s life expectancy has suffered which is why more and more people are looking for alternatives to the mass imported, plantation grown, pressure treated timbers which saturate the market. Larch is the local, logical alternative. It just makes sense.

The Cost
Larch does cost us more to buy (around 20%), but we are so convinced of its benefits we are absorbing as much of the costs as we can to see what the response is.

The extra cost is justified on many levels - it looks better, it lasts longer, it helps our local economy, it is organic and it is massively better for the environment than plantation grown imported timbers. All our major competitors use imported timbers which harm the environment, we want to proove that there is a market for natural, UK grown timbers in our industry.

Grow Your Own

Growing your own produce is becoming increasingly popular. Perhaps it is the state of the economy (an aveage gardener growing their own will save £1,312 is their 1st year on grocery bills), perhaps it is the satisfaction of eating something you have grown yourself. Whatever the reason, more and more of us are growing our own produce - and it's easy!

At Fat Leaf we are passionate about this and we have developed what we believe to be th best range of grow your own planters in the UK, and we always have exciting new ideas.

Obviously if you are growing your own produce you will want it to be organic, and that's why using untreated larch planters is a must. At no stage in the manufacture of these products have these timbers touched any chemicals, which could potentially transfer into the soil and contaminate your crop. Aside from being the organic alternative, larch will last as much as 4 times longer than tanalised pine in contact with the ground.

Square Planters

Fat Leaf's square planters need little introduction. They are square and they are planters. But wait! There's more.

These square planters are, we belive, the strongest in the UK. Each joint is reinforced with at least 4 galvanised staples and treated screws. The sections of wood we use are thicker than our competitors and our feet and flooring is not stuck on as an after thought like our competitors, it is selected to best suit the planter in question and spaced for drainage.

Not only that, using larch means that this planter will last up to 4 times longer than treated timber planters. And they look better.

Who'd of thought there could be that much to say about a box?

Hexagonal Planters

Fat Leaf’s Hexagonal range of planters are extremely versatile and look great in clusters of different heights & sizes. The larger hexagonal planters work very well as standalone centerpieces and allow plenty of room for roots.

Trough Planters

Fat Leaf Trough Planters are superb for edging a lawns, patios or driveways. They are the right depth (12 inches) for bulbs, herbs and perenials. They fit into practically any space and look great. Being made from larch they will last up to 4 times longer than treated pine.
