Our story

Fat Leaf was started in 2009 by Jim & Ross Clarke. The father and son started the business, primarily to offer a made-to-measure service for garden planters. They thought there was a gap in the market and that proved to be the case. As the company has evolved we have learned more and more about Britain's native timbers and the timber industry and we consider ourselves ahead of the curve in using only local, sustainable timbers, rather than mass imported, chemically treated, fast grown softwoods that saturate our industry.

Why use Larch?

Larch lasts longer
Larch is naturally resistant to rot
There are no chemicals involved in its production
Larch is exceptionally environmentally friendly
Larch looks better
Larch ages better
Larch is British

We love larch. It makes no sense not to use it. It makes no sense not to love it.

    Ross Jim Robin

Upon graduating from University with a particularly useful degree in Film Studies Ross embarked on a couple of years of travelling; during which time he fell into a career in advertising in South East Asia. After a few years in the advertising industry he had seen enough. When Jim told him about Fat Leaf Ross jumped at the chance and the rest is history.

    Where the magic happens

Our workshop is an old ropemaking building in Bridport's arts and vintage quarter. It is 1 mile away from our sawmill at Eype. We have set up a showroom at the front of the workshop and there's always water in our kettle (and sometimes sawdust in our cups) if you fancy a cup of tea and a chat about your project.
